MERIDIAN, Idaho (AP) - A southwest Idaho woman accused of setting fire to a mounted bison head at her ex-husband’s home faces arson charges. Police arrested Ryann Jean Stafford, 26, Thursday on a charge of third-degree arson, a felony.
Investigators said Stafford and her former spouse got into an argument at his home. But after he left the house, police said Stafford began throwing objects and then used a lighter to ignite the mounted head.
Another person who lives at the home extinguished the fire.
A judge has set bond at $100,000 and Stafford is being held in the Ada County Jail.
The maximum penalty for third-degree arson is 10 years in prison.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - What man taketh away, modern technology helps giveth back. The Subway sandwich shop at the True Bethel Baptist Church in Buffalo was robbed at gunpoint on Friday night, but the crime was recorded on the store’s surveillance video.
During Sunday church services, Rev. Darius Pridgen gave a sermon about the harm people do to one another. Pridgen included footage from the robbery and it was showed on two large video screens. His sermon also offered a $3,000 reward for the arrest of the suspect.
Within minutes after the service ended, four anonymous tips identifying the robber were received. A few hours later, police arrested David Glass, 45, and charged him with robbery and petit larceny.
Pridgen said he offered the reward because he wants to show his community that crime pays, but not for the criminal.

RICHMOND, Va. - A judge who ordered a woman to drop her pants and decided a custody dispute by flipping a coin was removed from the bench by the Virginia Supreme Court on Friday. The decision against Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Judge James Michael Shull of Gate City was unanimous.
“Unless our citizens can trust that judges will fairly resolve the disputes brought before our courts, and treat all litigants with dignity, our courts will lose the public’s respect and confidence upon which our legal system depends,” Justice Barbara Milano Keenan wrote.
According to the court, Shull admitted tossing a coin to determine which parent would have visitation with a child on Christmas. Shull said he was trying to encourage the parents to decide the issue themselves but later acknowledged that he was wrong.
The pants-dropping incidents, the court said, “were even more egregious.”
The court said they occurred when a woman was seeking a protective order against a partner who she said had stabbed her in the leg. Shull knew the woman had a history of mental problems and insisted on seeing the wound, the court said.
The woman dropped her pants once to display the wound, then dropped them a second time after Shull left the bench for a closer look to determine whether the woman had received stitches.
A court bailiff testified before the commission that after the hearing, he asked Shull, “Did you see what that lady had on?” According to the bailiff, Shull replied: “Yeah, a black lacy thing … it looked good, didn’t it?”
Shull denied making the comment. His attorney, Russell V. Palmore, did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment Friday.
The justices could have merely censured Shull, but they noted that he had appeared before the Judicial Inquiry and Review Commission in 2004 for allegedly calling a teenager a “mama’s boy” and a “wuss” and advising a woman to marry her abusive boyfriend. That complaint was dismissed with an admonition to Shull to chalk it up as a learning experience.

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — A number of gnomes have taken sanctuary at the Springfield police station.
Somebody apparently collected 75 lawn ornaments from around town and then, on the night of Oct. 17, placed them meticulously on and around the lawn of one house.
Among the plastic and porcelain geese, deer and frogs are gnomes, such as a weather gnome outfitted with a rain gauge.
Police want to find the rightful owners.
“We need to get them out of here,” Capt. Richard Harrison said. “Every time I leave my office they’re sitting in my chair, working on my computer. I can’t seem to get rid of the darn things.”
There will be a public viewing Tuesday.
“If they come here and they can identify it,” Harrison said, “we’re more than happy to let the gnome go home.”
After that the gnomes, and any other ornaments, will be sold at auction.

A genetic analysis of 25-year-old blood samples has outlined a new map of the AIDS virus’ journey out of Africa, showing that today’s most widespread subtype first emerged in Haiti in the 1960s and arrived in the United States a few years later.
The analysis fills in a gap in the history of the virus, whose migration has been known in only sketchy form from its origin in Africa in the 1930s to its first detection in Los Angeles in 1981.
Dr. Michael Gottlieb, an assistant clinical professor of medicine at UCLA and one of the discoverers of acquired immune deficiency syndrome, said the analysis placed the virus in the United States nearly a decade earlier than previously believed.
“It’s pretty clear evidence for Haiti as a steppingstone,” he said. “The suggestion that the infection was further below our radar than I’d previously suspected is kind of unnerving.”
The analysis, published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, focused on a variety of HIV known as subtype B, the most prevalent form in most countries outside of Africa.
Michael Worobey, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Arizona and senior author of the study, analyzed five blood samples collected in 1982 and 1983 from Haitian AIDS patients in Miami.
The samples were held in frozen storage by the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Worobey and his colleagues looked at two viral genes and compared their sequences with viruses from around the world.
As a baseline, they used virus samples from Central Africa that are considered some of the earliest forms of the human immunodeficiency virus .
Because viruses constantly mutate, researchers could construct a rough timeline of development by measuring how much the genes in more recent samples had drifted away from their ancestral forms.
The team found that the Haitian samples were genetically the most closely related to the African virus, indicating that they were among the earliest to branch off.
Statistically, researchers found a 99.7% certainty that HIV subtype B originated in Haiti, Worobey said.
Worobey surmised that the virus was brought to Haiti by workers who had gone to the Democratic Republic of Congo, formerly known as Zaire, after it became independent in 1960. The virus appears to have been carried to the United States by Haitian immigrants between 1966 and 1972, according to the mutation timeline.
Researchers have debated for years whether the U.S. epidemic came directly from Africa or through Haiti.
They have also debated whether Americans exported the virus to Haiti via a tourist sex trade that flourished in the late 1970s and early ’80s. Worobey said the latest study did “a good job of settling the debate. . . . This shows quite clearly that the data is really only consistent with a Haiti-first origin.”
Dr. Beatrice H. Hahn, a virologist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham who was not involved in the study, said: “I think these calculations are as good as the currently available methods allow.”
She cautioned against blaming Haitians or Central Africans for spreading the disease: “These viruses are fairly clever and they have to survive. They will find niches. . . . You realize chance events play a very important role.”
